Experience a Traditional Shabbat Meal: Frequently Asked Questions

Would you like to enjoy a Shabbat (Sabbath) meal? Read these questions and answers below, then fill out this form.

What is a Shabbat Meal?

"Shabbat" is the Hebrew word for Sabbath. In Judaism, the Sabbath starts at sunset on Friday and lasts until dark Saturday night.

Eating on Shabbat is a sacred, spiritual, and celebratory act. When Shabbat begins on Friday night, we celebrate with a nice meal, and we like to share it with others.

How much does it cost?

Nothing. The best thing you could do is "pay it forward" by showing hospitality to someone else.

What can I bring?

If this is your first time, it's probably best if you don't bring anything. If you become a regular visitor, ask your hosts for ideas.

What should I wear?

Some people like to wear dress clothes in honor of the Sabbath. But don't sweat it. If it's not practical or comfortable to dress up, then casual clothes are just fine.

Can I bring friends?

Yes, the more the merrier!

Can you accommodate my whole family?

We are willing to try!

Can you meet my special dietary or accessiblity needs?

It would be our honor to accommodate you in whatever ways we can. Please let us know if you require vegan or vegetarian, gluten-free, alcohol-free, or other special accommodations.

Please do not hesitate to sign up if you have vision or hearing impairments or limited mobility. Clarify your needs with your host, and they will work with you to provide what you need.

I am not Jewish. Can I come?

Yes. Chances are fairly high you won't be the only one!

I don't keep the Sabbath. Can I come?

Yes. All we ask is that you be respectful of the Sabbath-keeping home you are entering. Keep non-Sabbath things (such as phones or money) put away while you are visiting.

What if I don't understand any Hebrew?

While you will probably encounter some Hebrew words, you won't be expected to understand it. Just listen and enjoy the experience, and feel free to ask for translations if you are interested. By the end of the night you may have learned a little bit!

Can I come more than once?

Yes, we'd be delighted!

I'm afraid I might say or do something offensive by mistake. What should I do?

We are not easily offended. Be adventurous and ask lots of questions.

I'm just curious but I have no intention of joining your group. Can I come anyway?

Yes.

I don't live here, but I am just passing through for the weekend. Can I come?

Yes. Clarify that in your comments so that we make sure to get the timing right.

Why are you doing this?

The Sabbath is spiritually enriching and fulfilling. Hospitality is a weighty commandment and one of our highest values. We feel that if more people experienced the Sabbath, the world would be a much better place.

Can you provide a place to stay the night?

Possibly. Be sure to mention that need to your host and we will see what we can do.

Fridays don't work for me. What other options are there?

We also have a nice Sabbath meal for lunch on Saturday. Jewish holidays often occur on other days, and we have a special meal for those as well. Feel free to fill out the form anyway and mention that you would be interested in a Saturday lunch or holiday.
